Caring for Your Florida Pool in the Summer

• Make sure the circulation system is functioning. This system includes the skimmer, pump, pump strainer, drains, and filter…basically, everything that keeps your pool running cleanly! Each part of this system is necessary for your pool to stay clean, cool, and functional. You need to ensure that you run your pump once or twice each day for a few hours to make sure you are keeping it in shape.
• Keep the debris clear. You should do this every day/every week. Use your pool skimmer daily to fish out any floating debris from the pool that you can. Run a pool vacuum along the bottom once a week to pick up anything that has sunk down, like dust or dirt. You will also want to clean out your strainer baskets once a week and give the walls a nice brush with a soft-bristled pool brush.
• Check the levels (Part 1). You will want to keep an eye on the water level in your pool. The summer can get pretty hot, so water evaporation can be a problem. If you lose too much water, it could cause the chemical balance to fall out of whack. It could also cause damage to the skimmer if the water gets low enough that air gets pulled into the skimmer. If you notice that the water level always seems off even if you’ve recently filled it again, you may have a leak somewhere in your system. This is somewhat unique to Florida pools.
• Check the levels (Part 2). The other level that you need to maintain is your sanitation chemicals. Whether you have a chlorine pool or a saltwater pool, your need to do a weekly check to make sure that your sanitation system is balanced. If it isn’t, that is something that needs to be addressed quickly.

• Maintain your pool equipment. At the start of each pool season, do a thorough check of all of your pool equipment. Check the pool filtration components, the pool tools, the lining, the safety equipment, etc. Anything that is a part of your Florida pool and its efficient running should be checked each year to make sure it is still fully functional.
• Set the scene. Make sure that you have all of the accoutrements that will make your summertime fun by the pool fun and safe. Keep a stash of test strips, safety equipment, pool floaties, and anything else you may need on hand.
• Follow your manual. If your pool came with any kind of owner’s manual, be sure to read and follow it any time you need to do any maintenance. This will be able to give you more detailed instructions for your pool and its specific components.
