- Teach your kids how to swim: If your kid is going to be playing around in a pool, they should know how to swim, at least enough to survive. You can find so many options for classes for all different ages and skill levels, so take a look and find one that will fit your family’s needs.
- Never leave kids unattended in or around water: Kids are wily things, so keep a close eye on them when they are near water. You never know what may happen. If you are the one watching the kids at the pool, do so without any distractions.
- Make sure all pools have the proper drain covers: You know those movies where someone gets pulled into a vortex? That’s what can happen if your pool’s drain covers aren’t up to snuff. Be sure to have fully functional and compliant drain covers for your pool to avoid tragic accidents caused by suction from pool drains.
- Teach your kids to stay away from pool drains: In the same vein of pool drain safety, you should teach your kids to avoid pool drains. They should be taught not to play near them, and to make sure that they are not broken before getting in the pool. Hair, limbs, bathing suits, etc. can get stuck in pool drains, putting your child at risk even in shallow pools.
- Be sure to put quality barriers, covers, and alarms around/on your pool: Pools should always have covers on them when they are not in use. You’ll want to make sure it is secure and fully functional throughout the year. A great lifesaving addition to your pool would also be a barrier of some sort to keep the kids out when you aren’t around. You can even add an alarm to the door that leads out to the pool from your home to keep you alert.
- Know how to perform CPR on kids and adults: Learning CPR can literally help save a life. Bystanders are usually the first there to help a drowning victim, so being certified in CPR would be a very helpful skill to have up your sleeve. You can find classes for this through many different places.
- Know the basic rules of the pool: Don’t dive headfirst unless there’s a designated diving area, swim with a buddy, no roughhousing, etc. Be aware of your surroundings.
- For adults – swim sober: We know, sometimes a drink by the pool is just what the doctor ordered. However, if you plan on swimming then you need to stay above board with beverage consumption. You need to remain alert and aware.
There are definitely more tips we could add to this list, but these are by far the most important to keep yourself and your family safe. These rules apply to your pets, as well, folks. Treat your pet like your child when it comes to swimming pool safety tips. Remember: stay aware, stay alert, and stay safe.
