If My Pool Save from COVID-19?
“Can there be COVID-19 in my swimming pool?”, who would have thought before 2020 that you’d as the question. Yes its a year that we will remember for a long time. Many of us have enjoyed projects around the home, cooking meals and cooling off in the pool. We have heard many people ask and wonder can there be COVID-19 in my swimming pool, and put your family at risk. Let’s look at a few facts that we do know in order to answer that question.
Precautions For Your Swimming Pool
If you have your own swimming pool and only your family that live in your house use it, you have little to worry about. There is no evidence to show that Coronavirus can travel in the air outdoors over great distances and then infect COVID-19 in my swimming pool. Quite the opposite is actually proven when it comes to pool water. The CDC has clearly stated on pool safety that chlorine is recommended to be used to clean touch surfaces if possible. This kills the virus on contact. It would be safe then to assume the chlorine in your pool has the same effect. What if you have a community pool, and you share the pool with others, but you maintain your distance? Again the principal here lends us to believe you would be safe from contracting the virus from the water.
How To Protect Your Family
It is a very good practice to make sure your home is clean at all times and your pool fence is set up properly. Not just for Coronavirus, but really for all viruses and seasonal colds that can be passed from person to person as well. High touch points like door handles, faucets and counter tops should be cleaned. If you have a pool in your community that you use, make sure any surfaces you touch are cleaned first. While it’s unlikely to get sick from the virus in the pool, other items around the pool could make you sick. This includes pool toys, floats, deck chairs and other touch surfaces. While you should always wear a mask around people, it is also good to make sure you wipe down any surfaces you or you family may contact. Again the CDC guidelines found here are really helpful in keeping us safe.
While we await our turn to be vaccinated, now is not the time to let our guard down. Let’s work together to keep our pools and our families safe!
