Are Pool Floats Dangerous?
Those of us that have pools at our homes know how relaxing it can be on a pool float on a hot summer afternoon doing nothing at all. Did you know these same pool floats and toys can also be dangerous around the pool? This is especially true for young unskilled swimmers. Here are some reminders to keep your family around the pool.
Inflatable Pool Houses and Slides
These pool floats sure look like fun. The pool houses look safe for kids but you need to keep a close eye on them. First since the house has a roof and walls it may be difficult to always watch your child. They could slip out and under the water before you realize. Another danger is deflating. If these large pool floats like houses deflate your child could find it difficult to escape, or the float may become unstable and flip.
Likewise an inflatable slide, while fun can be dangerous. This time perhaps even outside the pool if you child were to fall off on the concrete decking. Head injuries could be serious. If used in the water away from the edge of the pool, the same concerns of flipping and deflating like the pool house should cause you to pay extra attention.
What About Swimming Aids?
When young children are learning to swim some parents will put arm floats or a similar pool float on them. Under supervision these can help your young ones to have confidence around the pool. This could help them to overcome fears in learning to swim. Unfortunately, kids don’t always realize how the floats work. Instead they may think they are bothering them and when you look away they can silently slip out of them and under the water.
Super Large Pool Floats & Toys
These large ducks or other inflatable toys may be great for out on the lake or a large body of water. The problem with using them in a small pool is the likelihood of them flipping over, or a child getting trapped below them. Again common sense is to keep a close eye on your kids. Also if you use large floats on large bodies of water, pay attention to the currents and the winds. You don’t want to have your child end up like this kid.
